Migrate Shopify AI Toolkit Skills to One Unified Skill

Shopify has consolidated about twenty individual AI Toolkit skills into a single shopify skill. Plugin installs update themselves, npx skills installs need a manual removal and reinstall in every environment.

Executive summary

What changed

AI Toolkit is Shopify's context package for AI coding agents. It covers developer documentation lookups, API schema references, validation for GraphQL queries, Liquid templates and extension configuration, plus store management tasks run through an authenticated Shopify CLI session. Until this release that context arrived as a long list of narrow skills, one per surface area. The list is now one skill called shopify, exposed by both the agent plugins and the public AI Toolkit repository.

The old names are deprecated rather than aliased. If your environment still carries shopify-admin or shopify-storefront-graphql, those skills stop receiving updates, and your agent may keep loading stale instructions next to the new unified skill. Most plugin based installations update themselves. Installations made with npx skills do not, so they need an explicit removal and reinstall in every environment where they were added.

Why it matters

The argument for AI Toolkit on a Plus build has always been accuracy rather than raw speed. An agent reading the current Admin API schema stops inventing fields that were removed two versions ago. An agent that validates a Liquid section before handing it over stops shipping templates that break once real metafield data is present. All of that depends on the right context loading at the right moment.

Description truncation quietly broke that dependency. When twenty skill descriptions compete for room in the context window, the agent sees fragments and guesses. The failure mode is not a clean error but plausible looking code written against the wrong API surface, caught in review if you are lucky and in staging if you are not. One skill with one description removes the guess.

For a Plus estate with checkout extensions, Functions and an ERP integration under active development, this is a fifteen minute task with a measurable effect on how much agent output your developers discard.

Role-specific impact

Use-case example

Real-world scenario

A Plus merchant running four regional storefronts is midway through a B2B price list rollout. Two contract developers and one internal engineer all use agent tooling with AI Toolkit installed via npx skills. Across the previous sprint, roughly one in five generated Admin API mutations referenced fields that do not exist on the 2026-10 version, because the agent loaded a truncated skill description and fell back to model memory.

The lead developer spends fifteen minutes running the removal and reinstall commands across three local environments and the shared CI image. In the following sprint, schema invalid mutations caught in review fall from five out of twenty-five to one, returning roughly two hours of senior review time per week. The work costs less than a single ticket.

Implementation checklist

  1. Inventory every environment with AI Toolkit skills installed: developer machines, shared dev containers and CI images, including global installs.
  2. For plugin based installs, confirm the plugin updated itself, or trigger an update through the agent's plugin management command.
  3. For npx skills installs, run npx skills remove -y against the deprecated shopify- skill names, adding -g where you installed globally.
  4. Install the replacement with npx skills add Shopify/shopify-ai-toolkit --skill shopify.
  5. Verify the agent now lists exactly one shopify skill and no leftover shopify- entries.
  6. Confirm Node.js 18 or higher on each machine, since the toolkit requires it.
  7. Have one developer generate an Admin API mutation and check it against your pinned API version before the team relies on the setup.

FAQ

Q: Do we need to change anything if our team uses Dev MCP?

A: No. Dev MCP and the ucp skill are outside the scope of this consolidation. Only installations of the individual shopify- skills need attention.

Q: Does leaving the old skills installed break anything immediately?

A: Nothing breaks immediately. The deprecated skills stop receiving updates, and keeping them alongside the new one reintroduces the context crowding this release set out to fix. Treat it as small technical debt.
