Everything Shopify B2B can and cannot do.

87 requirements manufacturers and distributors raise before a replatform, each checked against Shopify's own documentation. 58 are built in. Only 5 are a real no. Most of the rest have a named route: an app, or custom work.

The short answer, page 4

Most of it is built in. Only 5 are a real no.

Every requirement gets one verdict. Each square below is one of the 87, in the order the report counts them. The platform question is mostly answered. The work sits in your ERP, credit and buyer workflows.

87 requirements58 + 13 + 9 + 5 + 2 = 87
58

Built in

Set up in Shopify, not coded. Every pricing and catalog requirement is among them.

13

With an app

From the Shopify App Store, usually a monthly subscription.

9

Custom

Build work, from a small tweak up to a full ERP sync.

5

A real no

Shopify can't do it. Each has a workaround to plan for.

2

Being confirmed

Tax exemption certificates and freight (LTL) rates.

Inside the report

Read two pages before you ask for the other 57.

Each part answers the same five questions: what it is, what's available, how it works, where it gets hard, and how it's handled. The mechanism is drawn, not described.

1Pricing and catalogs·p. 09 of 59

Three ways to attach a price list. Each one fits a different contract.

  1. 11:1. One contract, one branch. A catalog made for one location, for a key account's negotiated contract.
  2. 21:many. One tier, many customers. Change the tier once and every location on it reprices.
  3. 3many:1. Many lists, one branch. Up to 25 catalogs per location on Plus, and the lowest price per variant wins.
  4. 4The pattern experts use. Shopify's own example: 50 price tiers and 10 assortments. Split them and you run 60 catalogs, not 500.

3Payments, terms and credit·p. 22 of 59

Cards, bank and terms are built in. Express checkout buttons are not.

  1. 1Every way a B2B buyer can pay. Cards, ACH for US stores, wire or cheque recorded by hand, wallets, and net terms, on every plan.
  2. 2Not for B2B. Shop Pay and Google Pay express buttons don't appear at B2B checkout.
  3. 3What a card costs. On a $50,000 order, every 1% in card fees is $500. A wire has no card fee.
  4. 4Your processor decides. Keep your own gateway and you keep cards, but lose card on file, ACH and due-date charging.

The bar shows how much of each part is built in: no app, no code. Part 7 is the decision, so it has no bar.

Who reads it

For manufacturers and distributors weighing a replatform.

  • Commerce and sales leads

Can every branch get its own price? Can buyers order the way they do today?

  • Finance and operations

Who gets to pay later, and how? Is there a credit limit? Who approves the big orders?

  • IT and ERP owners

How does the ERP stay the record? Connector, platform or custom?

Why we wrote it

It's the first question on every B2B call we take. Nobody had written down a straight answer, so we checked all 87 requirements. Read it before any vendor call, including ours.
